What a Child’s Sandcastle Taught Me About Romance

It fascinated me.

During one of my Robert Retreats at the beach, I watched a young child absorbed in play. It wasn’t so much their play. This child had been playing the same game when I walked by about an hour before.

Using a small plastic bucket, they’d fill it with wet sand, carry it above the waterline, and turn it upside down, adding to the line of “bucket-castles” previously created. Waves might erode some of their “castles.” They’d simply dig a small trench to protect their “castles.” Then back to creating more “bucket-castles”.

Amazing. A simple toy. But it had captured their attention for over an hour.

People can get so caught up in creating elaborate Romantic Moments. Their stomach churns as they take their partner on what they hope will be a magic-carpet-ride romance. Then they worry if it’s impressive enough for their partner.
• If it doesn’t leave their partner weak-kneed, they’re devastated.
• If it’s a resounding “success,” they wonder how they’ll create another even more dramatic.

If you’ve fallen into this trap, stop it! Renounce your membership in the it’s-got-to-be-stupendous-or-nothing club.

Observing this child, I realized they only needed a simple bucket with sand and water. They didn’t need $100 beach toys. Likewise, your partner doesn’t need you to romance them with extravagant Romantic Moments.

The reason?

It’s difficult to create multiple Romantic Moments which are more and more extravagant.

You can’t create as many extravagant Romantic Moments.

You can create simple Romantic Moments more frequently.

Truth is, your partner would probably prefer and feel more comfortable with simpler, more frequent Romantic Moments. Weekly Moments like strolling along a path, snuggling together to watch a movie, or making dinner together beat a lavish night out on the town once a month.

Simply romance your partner simply.

Would love to hear your opinion: Are simple, more frequent Romantic Moments better than infrequent, extravagant ones? Why? Why not?

Romance Alive has grown over the years and it has been cool to see. Thanks for staying the course on this important work.

The timely arrival of the product was appreciated. I followed the suggestions and my wife was surprised and excited. I am not a real romantic person. What I received was just what the doctor ordered. You will be hearing from me before long for something else.

Never before had I experienced such a meeting! In 2 hours we covered elements of romance overlooked by our fast paced life styles. I thought it may be a seminar on sex, but I was pleasantly surprised to observe that romance, thought it may lead to a sexual encounter, is NOT sex but has a deepening & enriching effect on the relationship. I think this seminar should be taught to our young people, college ag & married adults.
