Since the mid-1990s, underwater weddings have gained significant popularity, particularly in Thailand. They host an annual, record-breaking ceremony in Trang province. The Trang Underwater Wedding usually takes place over three days in mid-February, culminating on Valentine’s Day. In 2000, they were recognized as Guinness World Record for the largest underwater wedding. The ceremony was awarded to the Trang Underwater Wedding Ceremony in Thailand. Following the recognition by Guinness World Record of the Trang event, the record for the most couples simultaneously married underwater was 34, achieved on February 14, 2001, at the same location.
Other global destinations have begun creating specialized underwater wedding ceremonies. These include the Andaman Islands (India), Maldives, Bali (Indonesia), Bahamas, Cayman Islands, Bora Bora, Alonissos in Greece, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, and even specialized, aquarium-based locations in China.
